Did you know?
Just because you are a kidney transplant recipient does not mean you can’t have a drink. Responsible drinking is recommended. Drinking alcohol can affect many parts of your body, including your kidneys.
Abuse of alcohol can negatively affect your transplant’s success. Chronic alcohol use can lead to decreased immunosuppressive drug absorption. Also, chronic alcohol consumption can cause forgetfulness when it comes to taking immunosuppressive medications.
Be Careful!
When taken with some antibiotics, alcohol can cause some very unpleasant side effects such as a hot, flushed feeling, dizziness, nausea and vomiting.
Be Aware
In the short term, alcohol can result in trouble walking, slowed reaction times, poor sleep quality and memory problems. Over time, drinking large amounts of alcohol results in permanent brain damage and limits the growth of new brain cells. Women may be especially at risk for the negative effects of alcohol.
In Moderation
Some research studies have suggested that small amounts of alcohol might benefit brain function (e.g., 125 ml wine daily), but drinking alcohol above the maximum recommended limits can raise your blood pressure. Alcohol is also high in calories, so you may gain weight if you drink regularly.
Always Keep in Mind:
Alcohol may interact with medications prescribed after kidney transplantation. When prescribed a new medication, always discuss with your pharmacist or doctor to see if it is safe to drink.
