Episodes of stress are inevitable in the lives of all human beings. Kidney transplant recipients can be confronted with many stressors in their daily lives.

You may not be able to eliminate stress, but you can learn to identify sources of stress and respond to stressful situations in healthier ways. Learn new ways to reduce your stress by setting realistic goals and managing your time effectively.

Relax!

Deep breathing and other relaxation techniques, mindfulness meditation, and physical activity can help quiet the body and the mind. Yoga and other mind-body activities may be especially good ways to promote mental and physical relaxation. Also take a moment to laugh every day. A positive attitude can help you get through those bad events and stressful days.

Get Creative!

Other suggestions to find stress reduction are through music, art, drawing, poetry, gardening, biofeedback or even a good book. You may also find it helpful to seek out places of refuge and quiet or people who will really listen to you.

Get Help

Speak with your healthcare provider if you feel anxious or sad most of the time for two or more weeks. Effective treatments are available including regular physical activity, short term talk therapy, or medication.

Talk it Out

Depressive symptoms are common in kidney recipients. It is recommended that you discuss your mood and feelings with your healthcare team if you think you may suffer from depression or other mood problems.
