Did you know?
One of the most powerful things you can do for your health is to stay physically active. Staying active can help you feel good by lifting your mood, helping you sleep better at night, and helping you to manage stress. It will also improve your heart function, make your bones and muscles stronger and lower your blood pressure.
Start Slowly!
Take a look at what you are currently doing, build gradually and try not to sit for long periods of time. You can start by implementing physical activity into your everyday routine, whether it’s using the stairs instead of the elevator or walking to the store instead of driving. Gradually, you can implement a more regular exercise routine. It is best to start with low intensity exercises, such as riding an indoor exercise bicycle or taking a brisk walk or a slow jog on level ground or on a treadmill.
Choose What’s Right For You!
It is important to choose activities that you enjoy in order to make sure you stay on track and remain active. Many people find it easier and more fun to stay active when they are with a friend or in a group. Call your local community centre, public health unit or YMCA to find out what activities or clubs are offered in your community.
Take it to the Next Level!
When you are more advanced in your exercise training or sport you are practising, you can even try to participate in the Canadian Transplant Games (CTG). “The CTG are the premiere athletic celebration of sport for transplant recipients from across the country. The focus of the Games is to provide these individuals with a venue of national competition, and also to prepare for the World Transplant Games. Every athlete is welcome. For everyone, just crossing the finish line is already a victory.”
